Our black review unit looked completely unassuming, and the soft plastic rear casing and dark metal band accompanying the device's black bezel up front won't turn any heads, but it all works. The design of the Nexus 9 is reminiscent of last year's LG-made Nexus 5 or the plastic HTC One (E8). So while I had to deal with black bars when streaming widescreen video, I felt that the device's screen ratio and relatively compact build made it more comfortable to use in just about any other situation.

The 4:3 ratio isn't often used with Android tablets, but I find it much more manageable when dealing with devices of this size, especially in portait orientation when larger 16:9 and 16:10 screens can feel odd and unweidly. Wide viewing angles made it easy to share content with friends, although it also exposed a design flaw where light can be seen bleeding from the edges of the screen. Photos, video, and text generally looked good, although colors were not quite as bold as other quality tablet displays. All of the aforementioned hardware pushes Android Lollipop to an 2,048 by 1,536 resolution LCD panel, resulting in a pixel density of 281 ppi. Along with a 192-core Kepler GPU and 2GB of RAM, the new tablet is certainly no slouch, although I did experience the occasional stutter when hopping between apps or launching the new Overview / recent app list. The Nvidia Tegra K1 chipset aims to deliver console and PC-like graphics to the mobile space, and the latest Nexus is the first Android device to utilize a 64-bit version of the CPU-Android 5.0 is built to support 64-bit architecture, so you can see why this is a big deal. And, indeed, the new Nexus is rather impressive, but it isn't without some unfortunate flaws. Combined with a high-resolution display and Nvidia's 64-bit Tegra K1 chip, the Nexus 9 is a force to be reckoned with. Lollipop is beautiful, cohesive, and refined, and is the best thing to come to Google's mobile devices since Android 4.0 arrived three years ago.
